Question:  How can I reduce my district’s fuel costs?

Answer:    With gasoline over $3 per gallon and natural gas prices still on the rise, small school districts will be one of the first industries to feel the effect of increased fuel cost.  There are several ways to cut costs.  First, keep busses and vehicles in good shape.  Make sure regularly scheduled maintenance on engines such as changing filters and fluids occurs to obtain best fuel efficiency.  Tires should be at the correct inflation pressure for the load they carry.  Over-inflation increases slippage and wastes fuel.  Secondly, take advantage of the new SSDA/Comdata MasterCard Public Sector Purchase Card Program.  Comdata supplies solutions to 5 of the top 10 fleets in the United States.  Examples include:  FedEx, Coke, Pepsi.  The Comdata fuel/purchase card is the most widely accepted card in the transportation industry and will provide your district with the opportunity to negotiate bulk, discount fuel purchases with local stations in your area. It will be provided to SSDA members at zero interest and no fee upon request.  For more information and an application, call Shelly Tillery, SSDA, toll-free, (866) 443-7732.

Question:  It’s the beginning of a new school year.  Can you refer us to fun and safe learning and homework help sites?

Answer:  Fun and safe learning homework sites on the web help youth of all ages improve their academic performance.  Consider adding one or more of these sites to your teacher’s toolkits!  Ranger Rick of the National Wildlife Federation is a site filled with fascinating stories, experiments and fun with science.  Students can practice spelling at FunBrain.com.  Visit the Musical Spelling Rules site to learn songs that highlight spelling rules!  Of course,Scholastic.com’s Homework Hub has a tremendous number of resources to help students learn to organize assignments, write papers, improve their reading and math skills, and prepare for tests.  Parents will even find advice for handling homework challenges. RefDesk.com has resources, references, and experts to help with nearly any homework challenge.  The Little Explorers Picture Dictionary with Links (PreK) is a valuable resource for young students. The Internet Picture Dictionary (Spanish, English, French, German, and Italian) is a great resource for students learning words in a new language.
